English swear words
tits
“boobs / tits”
A vulgar but common term for breasts. Also used in expressions: 'tits up' means something has gone catastrophically wrong (British), derived from a dead bird lying belly-up. 'Getting on my tits' means annoying me intensely.
fuck
“fuck”
The most versatile English swear word. Can express anger, pain, surprise, or joy. Can function as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, or interjection.
fuckery
“nonsense / deceit / bizarre behavior”
Deceitful, foolish, or suspicious behavior; absolute nonsense.
hell
“hell”
Used to express surprise, confusion, or mild anger (e.g., 'what the hell').
cockwomble
“foolish person / idiot”
A person, usually male, prone to making staggeringly stupid decisions or statements.
bampot
“crazy fool / idiot”
A foolish, crazy, or deeply unhinged person.
for fuck's sake
“for fuck's sake / FFS”
An expression of intense exasperation, usually at something that shouldn't be this difficult. The possessive construction ('fuck's sake') treats 'fuck' as a proper noun whose well-being is being threatened by whatever has just gone wrong. Abbreviated to 'FFS' in texts and online.
piss
“piss / pee”
Versatile scatological term. As a noun it means urine; as a verb, to urinate; as an adjective ('piss-poor'), it means terrible; 'taking the piss' means mocking someone; 'pissed' means drunk (UK) or angry (US). Few English words have this many distinct profane meanings.
douchebag
“jerk / arrogant fool”
An American insult for an obnoxious, arrogant, or socially inept male.
pillock
“idiot / fool”
A wonderfully quaint British insult meaning a stupid person. Nobody using it today knows or cares that it derives from a Scandinavian word for penis — it's been completely sanitized by centuries of use. Safe to use in front of most grandmothers.
fucktard
“absolute idiot”
A vulgar insult aimed at someone making astonishingly stupid decisions.
jizz
“cum / semen”
Vulgar slang for ejaculatory fluid.
jackass
“idiot / jerk”
An American insult for a foolish, obnoxious, or reckless person.
knob-jockey
“asshole / gay slur”
A derogatory term aimed originally at homosexual men, but frequently generalized as a harsh insult for an annoying or unfair male.
cock
“dick / penis”
A vulgar term for the penis that also functions as a mild insult. 'You cock' is weaker than 'you dick' — it sounds almost old-fashioned. The word's dual meaning with roosters creates endless accidental humor in rural contexts.
smartass
“wise guy / smart aleck”
Someone who's clever in an annoying way — making sarcastic comments, pointing out technicalities, or answering rhetorical questions literally. Being called a smartass is almost a compliment, but the person saying it definitely isn't smiling.
bloody hell
“damn / oh my God”
The quintessential British exclamation. It combines two historically religious curses ('bloody' from 'by Our Lady' and 'hell') into a compound that expresses surprise, frustration, or exasperation. Ron Weasley says it approximately once per Harry Potter book, which is how most of the world learned it.
frigging
“freaking / fucking”
A cleaned-up substitute for 'fucking' that lets you express the same frustration while maintaining plausible deniability. Everyone knows what you actually mean, but the substitution makes it technically acceptable. It's the profanity equivalent of censoring a middle finger on TV — the message is completely intact.
