Female sex workers are called 鸡 (jī, chicken) — the most common slang term, widely known and frequently censored online. Male sex workers are called 鸭子 (yāzi, duck). The pairing isn't random: in Chinese folk culture, chickens and ducks are complementary farmyard animals, and the slang terms likely emerged together as a matched set. The words are understood by virtually all Chinese speakers but are considered crude and inappropriate for polite conversation. Calling someone a 鸭子 directly is a serious insult that questions their sexual morality and implies they sell their body.

The word occupies an interesting position in China's rapid social evolution. Male sex work in China is less openly discussed than female sex work, partly because it challenges traditional gender expectations in a society still influenced by Confucian models of masculinity. A 鸭子 is not just a person who sells sex — the word implies a man who has abandoned the masculine role of provider and protector to become an object of consumption. This makes the insult cut differently than calling a woman a 鸡: it attacks masculinity itself. In online discourse, calling a man a 鸭子 is used to imply he's living off women's money, even when no actual sex work is involved — it's become a general-purpose attack on men perceived as kept or dependent.

The word gained mainstream visibility through Chinese cinema, particularly the 2012 film "鸭王" (The Gigolo), a Hong Kong production that brought the term into pop culture conversation. On Chinese social media platforms like Weibo and Douyin, 鸭子 is lightly filtered but not as aggressively censored as explicitly sexual terms — its dual meaning as an actual duck provides enough ambiguity that automated filters often miss it. Users exploit this by posting duck emojis (🦆) as coded references to male sex workers or to imply someone is being a gigolo, creating a layer of plausible deniability that has become its own form of internet humor. The duck emoji is now semi-permanently coded with this secondary meaning in Chinese internet culture.
